Ariadne auf Naxos at Merola Opera Program
Location: San Francisco Conservatory of Music
Ariadne auf Naxos is a distinctive opera by Richard Strauss that blends mythological tragedy with lighthearted comedy in two parts: a Prologue shows a clash between serious and comic performers forced to share the stage, while the main opera depicts Ariadne’s despair after abandonment on Naxos. She is countered by Zerbinetta’s playful view of love, until the god Bacchus brings renewal and transformation. Celebrated for its inventive structure, virtuosic vocal writing, and seamless fusion of contrasting styles, the work holds an important place in the operatic canon as a sophisticated meditation on the relationship between art, emotion, and theatrical form. Conducted by Ann-Katrin Stöcker and directed by Omer Ben Seadia (Merola ’14).

Der fliegende Holländer at Staatstheater Kassel
Location: Staatstheater Kassel (Interimsspielstätte), DE
In the vastness of the interim beats the dark heart of German Romanticism. The Dutchman wanders aimlessly on the ocean of the global market, accumulating abstract wealth. The boundless compulsion to increase his wealth appears to him as a curse, condemning him to eternal restlessness. Only the compensatory counter-model of eternal fidelity promises the Dutchman salvation from competition, and so he finds his last hope in the bourgeois ideal of love. The businessman Daland entices him with his daughter Senta, who also dreams of unconditional love and is desperately searching for a higher purpose in life. A deal is a deal in the age of tech billionaires, and so the transaction is quickly concluded, even though Senta doesn't actually want to be harnessed to the spinning wheel. And then there's Erik, who also lays claim to Senta. Between different lifestyles, Senta's ideal image soon proves to be an empty abstraction…
Many a worldview is shaken when Wagner's mighty sonic storms, under the musical direction of our new First Kapellmeister and Deputy General Music Director Clemens Fieguth, sweep through the Interim. At the eye of the storm lies Wagner's central theme: the sacrifice of the individual for the greater good. For The Flying Dutchman, directors Marlene Pawlak and Florian Lutz transform the Interim into a small-town microcosm where the hardships of social conditions are laid bare.

Hänsel und Gretel at Staatstheater Kassel
Location: Staatstheater Kassel (Interimsspielstätte), DE
Hansel and Gretel are hungry. This life-threatening situation affects one in five children in Kassel, due to rising food prices and poverty rates. Hansel and Gretel are literally being eaten alive by hunger. They can only dream of a gingerbread house decorated with their favorite sweets. When they spill the milk, their impoverished parents punish them by sending them into the forest to gather berries. Desperate, the siblings set off, but they can't find their way back home. In the enchanted fairy-tale forest, Hansel and Gretel encounter all sorts of fantastical creatures who help them on their adventure, until suddenly the famous question, "Nibble, nibble, little mouse, who's nibbling at my little house?" echoes from the woods.
... Humperdinck's beloved family opera, a classic German tale rooted in a sense of identity, is based on the Brothers Grimm's fairy tales and is presented by director Jessica Glause together with young people from Kassel in a way that is both enchanting and realistic – a fantastical journey through a dark forest, an escape from childhood poverty, and a courageous coming-of-age story. Under the musical direction of Viktor Jugović, Humperdinck's catchy yet multifaceted late-Romantic composition unfolds into an opulent soundscape, sometimes sounding childlike and joyful, sometimes dark and dramatic. Wagner light with a broomstick ride!
Hansel and Gretel is a PLUS production in collaboration between the Music Theatre and JUST+.
